Building a Thriving Team in Compliance

How it started

Our client is part of one of the Compliance team at one of the world’s leading rare disease companies, focused on transforming the lives of patients in over 50 countries. In 2021 they were acquired by another major biopharmaceutical corporation, leading to considerable internal change and significant growth opportunities.

FiveAndCo. were already working with the International Compliance team – a global team with bases in Boston, Zurich, Tokyo, Sydney and beyond – and were excited to be invited to support the Global team as they evolved and grew.

 

The Relationship

Our relationship with our client’s team began back in 2018, with an invitation to meet at offsites in Barcelona and Zurich.

Based in Boston, MA with a small and highly influential group, our client understood that creating a thriving team wouldn’t happen by chance. He invited us to join him on the journey as he invested in them; looking at their individual and collective strengths, developing their natural leadership tendencies, increasing their ability to communicate effectively and shaping a clear narrative to underpin their work.

 

The Journey

We made it our mission to enable them to be as great at how they work together as they are at what they do in their work partnering brilliantly with the business.

We began by enabling the team to better understand themselves and others. Working from the principle we need to know ourselves before we can lead and influence others, we used ‘5 Voices’ as a way of encouraging team members to tune into their natural leadership tendencies and understand how these affect the way they interact with others.

From this we were then able to work with individuals across the group to unlock their potential; What’s holding them back? What’s driving them forward? How can they be a better business partner?

Using focused, mentor style one-to-ones we developed strong relationships across the group which became the foundation of our relationship.

We’ve been with the team throughout as they’ve continued to evolve and grow. Typically referred to as trusted partners, we get to know our clients, their commercial challenges, their leadership stories and the underlying culture of their organisation.

From international gatherings to virtual conferences, the time we spent with this Compliance team has spanned periods of change, both internally and globally. This meant the skills we shared with the team needed to be adaptable and versatile. For instance, before, during and after the acquisition, we supported the Compliance group by helping them to deal with and embrace the change. ‘Leading through change’ became a mantra for the team and FiveAndCo. were there to guide them successfully both as individuals and as a group.

Our client took over the running of the Global Compliance group in 2021 and we’re proud to say both him and his team are now stronger than ever before.

 

The Future

Giving the Global Compliance team a safe space to tune into each other has enabled this team to speak up, speak out and challenge each other to do their very best. They report some of the highest levels of psychological security, meaning they’re able to continue to thrive by using the skills and insights they’ve learned. Crucially they trust each other to do their very best and using the Team Guiding Principles we helped them to define, they are able to maintain and sustain what they do – even during periods of intense change.
